Molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a common childhood illness with an estimated prevalence of 1/200 in the 1-10 y/o age group, and is epidemic as a sexually transmitted disease among sexually active adults.. All current treatment options for molluscum are invasive, requiring curettage, freezing, or burning. These options involve pain and discomfort to the child and accompanying distress to the parent. Often, no treatment is recommended to parents, the assurance being given that the bumps are harmless and eventually will go away. However, lesions often spread, covering large portions of the body where they may persist for up to two years. In addition, scarring can occur. At CBR, Inc we have developed ZymaDerm (formerly named Virucide): a safe, natural, topical agent to aid in the treatment of molluscum.

ZymaDerm (Virucide) in the Treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum

31 children with molluscum contagiosum were enrolled in the study. Figure 1 below is a flow chart of the study protocol. Children were otherwise healthy. Length of time with molluscum ranged from 1-15 months. Children were randomized to active treatment (ZymaDerm) or control vehicle (olive oil). Treatment consisted of application of one drop of ZymaDerm or vehicle to each molluscum lesion twice daily.

Treatment was continued for 30 days. Treatment was considered successful if molluscum lesions completely cleared or were reduced in number by greater than 90%. The mixture was well tolerated, painless, and consistently effective. The regimen of twice daily topical application resulted in high parental satisfaction and compliance rate. The oil-based mixture did not stain skin or clothing.

In the ZymaDerm (Virucide) treated group, 81% (13/16) of children had either complete clearing or a greater than 90% reduction in the number of molluscum contagiosum lesions at the end of 30 days. An additional 2 children had a greater than 50% reduction in molluscum but less than 90% clearance. In the vehicle treated group, NONE (0/16) of the children had clearing of the molluscum. Preliminary results of our work using an earlier preparation have been published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, 2004; vol 58, #4.

In this study, adverse effects were limited to a small amount of redness around the base of some lesions. No child discontinued treatment due to adverse reactions and no child displayed any sign of pain or discomfort from application of ZymaDerm according to parental report. It should be remembered that molluscum lesions are sometimes accompanied by inflammation as part of the disease process

Our original studies tested ZymaDerm in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum in children. However, results of on-going studies show that ZymaDerm works well for molluscum in adults as well.

If you are allergic to iodine you should send us an email and we will prepare ZymaDerm without iodine for your use.

FDA Required Disclaimer: ZymaDerm is not intended to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any disease. The FDA has not evaluated this product or these statements.

Caution: Some people may experience a small amount of redness at the application site, but this quickly abates with discontinuation. ZymaDerm should be applied to the molluscum lesions directly, care being taken to minimize contact with normal skin. Spills on skin should be washed with soap and water; eyes should be flushed with warm water in case of accidental contact. In case of accidental ingestion seek medical attention. ZymaDerm contains iodine and is not to be taken internally.
